A Traditionalist's Touch With Brass Hill Design

Brass Hill Design founders Remy Crisci & Mariel Goodson

Mariel's Design Tip

"Layer, layer, layer. This is the phase where the space comes to life and really becomes a reflection of the people living there. Gathered lampshades in a funky pattern, baskets of cozy throw blankets, a tray of curious consignment finds on the coffee table, stacks of books, collections of hand-crafted ceramics. And plants. Greenery is so important in creating a room that feels alive - and complete."

Mariel's Favorite Interior Designers

Elizabeth Hay for her aspirational ability to play with patterns and prints, and her uniquely global, eclectic aesthetic. Kathryn M Ireland for following her own circuitous and untraditional path to the design world and her exuberant, off-the-cuff use of texture, color and proportion. Andrew Howard for his charming, cheerful Southern style and hilarious Instagram feed.

Meet Mariel

Mariel Goodson, co-founder of Brass Hill Design, a boutique interior decorating firm outside of Manhattan. Mariel Goodson spent the first few years of her career in the editorial world, writing for magazines such as Better Homes & GardensMartha Stewart LivingGood Housekeeping and Redbook. After embarking on a three-year process of restoring and renovating two homes in the suburbs of New York City, she unearthed her passion for perpetual reinvention, eventually trading in her laptop for a hardhat. A traditionalist at heart, Mariel loves textured raffia walls and low-pile Persian rugs, burnished gold accents and lacquered brass fixtures. She hoards handmade ceramics, can’t resist a peacockish powder room and has an insatiable appetite for faux bamboo. When Mariel isn’t elbow-deep in swatches and samples, she’s chasing her three young sons up and down the yellow brick roads of her hometown in Westchester.

"Don't decorate with perfection in mind. The goal should be to create a room that feels collected and curated and interesting. That may mean a riotous mix of prints that speak to you, a bold wall color that just makes you happy, kooky antiques and heirlooms, or something really funky that you just have to have. Go for it - or at least trust your decorator to go for it." - Mariel
